Autophagy Research: Current Status and Future Perspectives
This white paper, authored by Dr. Noboru Mizushima of the University of Tokyo, describes the current state of autophagy research and future areas of research and drug discovery. He discusses the impact of the discovery of ATG genes in autophagy research, the role of autophagy in disease, and the development of therapeutics targeting the autophagy pathway.
Dr. Mizushima is a leading autophagy researcher whose work has been published in more than 150 journals. His work includes his discovery of the ATG12 conjugation system , a protein that plays an important role in proper autophagy functioning. Most notably, Dr. Mizushima’s other work includes collaboration with Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, recipient of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in the study of autophagy.
